The Amistad was a slave ship where the slaves successfully revolted. When the ship landed in the colonies the courts in the north decided the Africans who revolted were free people.

Conditions on a slave ship:
  • Packed in very tightly
  • 15-20% mortality rate
  • Filthy, buckets for waste
  • Might not know the language of anyone around you
  • Force fed if you refused to eat
  • Might be thrown overboard if you were sick or there was a food shortage
  • Unbearably hot and smelly
